The first challenge was deciding the location for the centre of the solar system: where should the Sun be? After considering many sites, Broxburn Academy was chosen. The school seemed ideal not only because it was close to Kirkhill House - the original site of the Pillar - but because of its links to learning. The sculpture is made from many layers of stained glass art film fixed to a perspex face, backlit by LED lights. The real Sun shines during the day, the artificial one is timed to turn on at dusk and glow gently during the night.
